Background
About Shaniwar Wada: History and Background
Shaniwar Wada was the seat of the Peshwas, the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire, in Pune. Peshwa Bajirao I laid the foundation on 10 January 1730, and the palace was opened on 22 January 1732.
Narayanrao, a young Peshwa, was killed here in 1773, and a popular legend speaks of a night-time cry heard at the fort. On 27 February 1828 a great fire started inside the palace complex and burned for seven days. Whether the ghost story is true is a matter of legend, and the monument is first of all a historical site.
