Paithani Silk Weaving Center – Overview
A Paithani silk weaving center is where the famous Paithani saree is made by hand. The saree is named after Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Today Yeola, in Nashik district, is described as the largest producer.
This guide explains the craft, what to look for, how visits to weaving centres work and how to avoid fake or power-loom products. We do not recommend specific shops or quote prices.
Heritage
Paithani: A Short History
The saree is said to have flourished under the Satavahana dynasty, which traded with Greco-Roman regions. In the 17th century the Peshwas moved some weavers from Paithan to Yeola, which became the main hub. Paithani received a Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2010.
Craft
How a Paithani Is Woven
It is made of silk and zari (metallic thread). The weave is a plain weave with tapestry-style weft figuring. Typical features are an oblique square border and a peacock-motif pallu. Common motifs are the peacock, lotus, swan, parrot and a flowering vine. The time a handloom Paithani takes depends on the design and the amount of zari work, from several weeks for simpler pieces to many months for elaborate ones.
Buyer guide
Visiting a Weaving Centre: What to Look For
- Ask to see the loom and the weaver at work
- Ask for the GI tag or authenticity details
- Compare the reverse side; handloom tapestry work is neat
- Be cautious with very low prices; power-loom “semi-Paithani” versions sell for much less and can mislead buyers
- Ask for a proper bill
Prices vary a lot depending on design and zari. We do not quote prices.
