Overview

Chand Minar – Overview

The Chand Minar at Daulatabad is a tall victory tower built in the fifteenth century by a Bahmani sultan. It stands near the fort’s entrance and is easy to see on a visit.

This guide explains the tower, how to photograph it and how to include it in a Daulatabad trip.

Background

About Daulatabad Fort (Devgiri): History and Background

Daulatabad Fort stands on a rocky hill near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) in Maharashtra. It was known as Devagiri, or Devgiri, when it was the capital of the Yadava dynasty, which ruled this region in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries.

In the fourteenth century the Delhi sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq renamed it Daulatabad and tried to move his capital here from Delhi. The plan was reversed, but the name stayed. Later the fort passed through the hands of the Bahmani, Nizam Shahi and Mughal rulers and then the Marathas and the Nizam.

Highlights

What to See at Daulatabad Fort (Devgiri)

These are the main things visitors come for.

  • Chand Minar – a tall tower built in the fifteenth century by a Bahmani sultan, near the entrance.
  • The moat and outer walls – the fort was ringed by defences, and the moat is part of what made it hard to take.
  • The dark passage – a winding tunnel on the climb, planned as a defence. Carry a phone torch.
  • Bharat Mata Temple area – a large pillared hall within the fort.
  • The summit – a climb of many steps, with wide views of the plain.

The tower

About the Chand Minar
