Location

Where Is Aurangabad? Location and Region

Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) lies in Maharashtra, in the Marathwada region. It is the largest city in Marathwada and the administrative headquarters of Aurangabad district. There are other places called Aurangabad in India, for example in Bihar, so searching with “Maharashtra” avoids confusion.

The name

Aurangabad vs Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

The city was officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023. The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the proposal on 23 February 2023, and the Bombay High Court ruled the renaming legal on 7 May 2024. How to Reach Aurangabad, Maharashtra

Aurangabad has its own airport, with connecting flights to cities including Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai. Background

A Short History of the Name

In 1610 the Ethiopian military leader Malik Ambar established a new city called Khadki at the site of modern Aurangabad, to serve as the capital of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. His son Fateh Khan later renamed it Fatehnagar. Aurangzeb annexed the city into the Mughal Empire in 1636 and in 1653 renamed it Aurangabad, making it the capital of the Deccan region. The official change to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is recent, so you will still see the older name on many boards, forms and websites.
