Ajanta has 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves, built in two phases. Caves 1, 2, 16 and 17 hold the largest surviving group of ancient Indian wall paintings. The bodhisattva Padmapani in Cave 1 is one of the most famous images. UNESCO listed Ajanta in 1983.

The caves are about 100 km from Aurangabad. Allow a full day, including the road time. The caves are open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and are closed on Mondays. The ticket is ₹40 for Indian visitors (₹35 if booked online) and ₹600 for foreign visitors (₹550 online); children under 15 enter free.

Ellora’s 34 caves are numbered from south to north: 1–12 Buddhist, 13–29 Hindu and 30–34 Jain. Cave 16, the Kailasa Temple, is carved from a single rock. Many visitors spend two to four hours here. The ticket is ₹40 for Indian visitors and ₹600 for foreign visitors, and children under 15 enter free. Listings give different timings and weekly closing days for Ellora (Monday or Tuesday), so check before you fix your day.
