About Shree Bhadra Maruti Mandir Khuldabad

Bhadra Maruti is a Hanuman temple at Khuldabad, in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. “Bhadra” means auspicious, and “Maruti” is another name of Hanuman. One account says the town was once called Bhadravati.

Wikipedia says a reclining Hanuman is found in only three places: this temple, one at the Ganga–Yamuna sangam in Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) and one at Jam Sawali (Madhya Pradesh).

Story

The Legend of Bhadra Maruti

A popular story speaks of King Bhadrasena, a devotee of Rama, who was singing devotional songs when Hanuman appeared and then entered a reclining state of meditation. The king asked him to stay and bless devotees. Another local tradition credits the saint Samarth Ramdas with finding the image. Both accounts are accepted locally; they are traditions and not documented history. Incredible India also gives a third story, in which the sage Bhadra cast a spell on a mountain while Hanuman was on his way to save Lakshmana, and Hanuman agreed to stay as an idol if the spell was lifted.

Visit

Visiting the Temple: Busy Days and Festivals

Saturdays and Tuesdays are commonly busy. Hanuman Jayanti and Ram Navami draw lakhs of devotees, and many devotees visit on Saturdays in the month of Shravan. Some walk from Aurangabad and nearby villages.

Wikipedia says the temple was destroyed in medieval times, during Mughal rule, and the idol was reportedly saved and hidden. In the 1960s devotees moved it back to its original site and built a marble temple whose design blends North and South Indian styles. Shrines to Ram, Lakshman and Sita stand beside the main shrine. Incredible India notes that aarti is held twice a day, morning and evening.
