History of the Kolhapur New Palace
The palace was built between 1877 and 1884, a seven-year construction period, at a reported cost of about seven lakh rupees. What to See: Shahaji Museum and Darbar Hall
The ground floor houses a museum with royal costumes, weapons, games, jewellery, embroidery and silver elephant saddles. Displays also include a letter from the British Viceroy and Governor General of India, one of Aurangzeb’s swords and a section of stuffed animals such as tigers, bears and deer. The Darbar Hall is a double-height hall with stained-glass scenes from the life of Shivaji and a raised throne.
Part of the palace is the residence of Shahu, a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, so access to some areas is not allowed.
